Looking out of the window of the centre you are treated to a
magnificent view of Coniston Old Man and the surrounding fells.
This area offers some of the most varied fell walking and
scrambling in the Lake District. There are
numerous routes up to the top of The Old
Man - from the popular tourist route, to interesting scrambles and the less
well known routes where you can still find peace and quiet even on a bank
holiday weekend.
The area is also steeped in history, with the Coppermines
valley being an interesting place to explore some of the Old Mines under the
guidance of an instructor or peruse some of the Old machinery that still
remains in the valley.
The Langdale Fells are within easy reach of the centre with
further opportunities for interesting scrambling and walking or Hellvelyn with
its famous edges is also within reach of the centre.
Many of the young people visiting the centre have never
experienced either the physical effort required to get to the top of the
mountain or the sense of achievement when they finally reach the summit. For
many, however, this is the day that sticks in their memory when they reflect on
their week and is a valuable part of the residential at Lanehead.
